These amazing FREE utilities convert standard *.WAV, *.AIFF and*.AIF sound files to Roland W‑30 or DJ‑70 wavesamples and stores them as a W‑30 or DJ‑70 compatible disk image. This provides an alternative to manually sampling via the analog input. The files are saved as standard W‑30 or DJ‑70 disk image files which means you can write the new Sound Disk to a 3.5' physical floppy diskette with a Roland capable disk utility (such as OmniFlop) or use the files directly with a GOTEK USB Floppy Emulator
I've been using this utility quite a lot lately and it certainly is a huge timesaver! I'm able to take my giant collection of high quality *.WAV files and convert them quickly by simply dragging and dropping them into a folder and then running the utility. Since there's no need for setting up a microphone or plugging in an instrument to get the sound levels just right, there's no time wasted. Quick and easy!!!
These utilities are able to convert the original wavesamples to either 15kHz or 30kHz depending on the quality desired and the amount of disk space you want to use. The program is very intuitive and will fill up the disk automatically for you. It is also possible to store additional sounds on any existing W‑30 disk image. When the converter is run, the new wavesamples will be converted and added to the original disk file rather than creating an entirely new blank disk image. This can be useful for optimizing space in your sampler libraries by increasing the number of sounds on each disk

This is a collection of unusual S‑50, S‑550, S‑330 and W‑30 samples from my library. I am sharing these with anyone who wants them. Some will think these are completely worthless while others will think they are magical. Most are sound effects, spoken word or sounds of nature plus a few music‑worthy samples. I created some of these from scratch and others are some I have sampled from movies, TV broadcasts, LP's and CD‑ROM's. Steve Titchiner has generously made his private collection of S‑50 and W‑30 samples available for downloading. This is a very large 104 disk collection with a vast array of digital and analog sounds. Also included are several utilities and tools of legacy software for sample manipulation

The Streetwise 104 Disk Collection (S‑50 / W‑30 Format)

Back in the 80's and 90's, Roland offered new sampler owners a great bonus perk. You could drop by any authorized store which sold Roland gear and copy 3.5' floppy disks from their library of samples for free. My experiences with doing that were mixed. I had three stores I used but they never had the complete library available. Sometimes they had a good selection of disks but they were damaged after years of use and they could not be copied. Below are the three libraries which Roland distributed to S‑50, S‑550, S‑330 and W‑30 owners for free (RSB‑50x / RSB‑550x / L‑Series). The highly sought after L-CD1 CD-ROM contains the entire collection of all three libraries, almost. Unfortunately, there are a few library disks absent from the CD‑ROM. Luckily, they're ALL here! If you are fortunate enough to have an external CD‑ROM connected to your S‑550 or W‑30, it really makes things convenient. Loading samples is a breeze when using a CD‑ROM. A matrix of external CD‑ROM's and mechanisms compatible with the S‑550 and W‑30 is here

• Back Story
  'These samples were created by David Marshall, now of Sound Technology Ltd, to promote sales of Roland Samplers for Roland UK. Back then, in the early '90s, Roland had a sizable presence in the UK with stores and distributors and they were called 'Roland System Houses' and some 'premium' products like the S‑770 and the E‑660 Parametric EQ were only available from the System House. The lack of a substantial back catalogue of samples, that came with competing products from Akai, also motivated the distributors to become active in producing samples. Details of the author of these samples are below and he has given his consent for these samples to be distributed freely'

Unlike normal S‑750/S‑760/S‑770 Sound Disks, the original uploader decided to create this collection as Low Density DS/DD floppies... not the standard High Density DS/HD size. There are two extra files included in the *.ZIP download: A short MP3 demo and a PDF description. Note that these files will NOT work with a 'Plain Jane' factory firmware GOTEK installed in an S‑760 because they are Low Density. Otherwise, these disk image files will work just fine as‑is on a GOTEK updated with FlashFloppy v3.9a or greater *

The S‑760 has a strange setup when accessing floppy disk files. Roland used a more expensive 3.5' DD which serves a dual purpose by reading and saving both low density 720KB DS/DD and high density 1.44MB DS/HD disks. This means that with the factory installed 3.5' FDD, you are able to use the 'Convert Load' command to load S‑550 & W‑30 disks on the S‑760, boot with the default high density 1.44MB Operating System disk and also load/save high density Sound Disks. Some of the older GOTEK setups had issues reading/saving both densities on the S‑760. There was a density‑select issue with the S‑760 which has existed since FF v2.2a but Keir Fraser has fixed this starting with FF v3.9a

One of the problems with using S‑550 and W‑30 ZIP Disks and 80MB Hard Drives is they are a Roland proprietary format. This means you can't back them up easily. This is a cool way to archive and/or clone Roland proprietary format ZIP disks and 80MB Hard Drives. ZIP Disk #1, ZIP Disk #2 and ZIP Disk #3 are the first in a series of 80MB cloned ZIP Disk and 80MB Hard Drive image files each containing 64 RSB Sound Disks. Over the years it became difficult for Roland Corporation U.S. to distribute the Sound Bank library in this manner due to our dealers no longer having the actual instruments in stock to make copies of the library in the stores. In order to still have the Sound Bank library available to our customers, Roland Corp U.S. is setting up several sites on online services around the country. The files that are online are image files of the actual Sound Bank disks. In order to convert these image files into readable sampler disks you will need an IBM or Macintosh computer and the appropriate program for that platform.'
